Whenever I have to run errands in the Freyung area, a short city walk between Hof – Kunstforum – Freyung – Ferstel Passage – Herrengasse is a Must. Having a coffee, buying some french stuff, like special salt for my salt collection (here) at the Épicerie fine & Bistrot Beaulieu or at Xocolat.
One of the most amazing things in Vienna is the culture of architecture you are surrounded by when exploring the city. Buildings, hundreds of years old, in between green Parks. And then there are areas, which had their moments, but everyone is happy, when they are gone, like the 140 years old South Rail Station. I remember very well that this was a place where I don’t have one happy memory, when in the need of even crossing the place except the old lion sculpture. Maybe I wasn’t the only one, who felt that way, because this is literally the only old stone you will find at the new Central Station of Vienna.
When viennese residents speak of a walk in the second district area, they would probably choose the Prater parkway – one of Vienna’s green lungs. Now that is beautiful and peaceful at the same time, but the 2nd district has an attraction not to miss: the Vienna University of Economics and Business completed in 2013. The new WU Campus is the epitome of a modern university campus and more than just a place for teaching and learning. It is designed to create a new space for social, cultural and political life.
Visitors and area residents are more than welcome at the WU Campus, which offers not only food for thought, but also restaurants, cafés and shops, all in a stimulating architectural environment.

Six architect groups sign responsible for this new modern place in Vienna. My favorite is the centrally located Library & Learning Center, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. If you wish to learn more about the architecture on the Campus there are two Tours offered by atours-vienna
- Outdoor Areas and Forum 1,5 – 2 hours
- of the Buildings (with break): 3.5–4 hours
And then there is a fine new restaurant: Das Campus
Juicy burgers (some call them the best burgers in town already), crispy thin tartes and several austrian and some mediterranean dishes. Everything is freshly prepared and still very fairly priced. The weekly new two course lunch is offered for 6,90 from monday to friday.
MO-SA 09AM – 12PM, Sunday 09AM – 10PM and breakfast until 6PM! Isn’t that great for people, who love extended breakfast hours?
U2 station: Krieau. 3 minutes walk along the Trabrennstraße
My outfit of the day fitted in perfectly to the earthy shades of the welcoming interior, which truly is not only comfortable, but very well chosen. Only one wish: When do they open a merchandise-shop with the printed pillows and waiters T-Shirts? I’d love to buy both!
There have been attempts turning the canal banks of the Danube Canal into a recreational area since the ’90s. Like everything in Vienna, it took some time, but slowly the Donaukanal starts to get a very attractive point.
Streetart found its place here first and you will find new artworks every week.
Something for every taste.
Sometimes critical sometimes just sweet.
But most of the time with great effort.
In between little Pop-Up Stores selling handprinted organic T-Shirts at the City Beach. (above Viereck-Design; below Wiener Jugendstil).
Hungry? No problem at all!
„Badeschiff“ (Holy Moly) provides not only a sundeck and a pool, but great food or „It’s all about the meat, baby“ will serve the best french fries in town.
It’s the perfect Short City Walk between Schwedenplatz and Urania.
