When a cake is enough for lunch.
You will find a recommendation for Café Central in pretty every tourist guide. That said, you can imagine, you will not be an insider, when you walk through the glass doors of the legendary Café, which has been popular for about 140 years now.
Lately I just had to walk in, because there was this special craving, for a very special viennese pastry.
The Cremeschnitte (cream slice)
I knew full well, that I would not need another meal in the next few hours, because that slice is truly a meal in itself. But still, go try! Maybe share one.
Cremeschnitte is a classic viennese pastry with various layers of super-thin puff pastry filled with a mixture of vanilla and whipped cream.
And take your time before you order your coffee, because you can choose from quite a range of typical viennese specialties, like the picture below shows. The waiter won’t be really friendly anyway. (And don’t take it too personal. It’s the viennese waiter way.)
There is something healthy too 😉 – the café offers delicious organic juices for the extra vitamin shot. My favorite: blackberry-apple-lime
Do it like Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg or Leo Trotzki and countless politicians or journalists. Enjoy the unique architecture combined with home-made pastries or even try a coffeehouse dinner with piano music (daily from 05-10 p.m.).
It is an experience you won’t forget. – I promise.
