Today I Like … Christmas Roses

What most friends and unfortunately, like it seems family as well, don’t know: From all the flowers you could get or find, I Like – not to write Loooooove – Christmas Roses (helleborus niger) best.

And yes I know we are up to search for Easter Eggs in a few days, but still: Now is the time in Vienna and all over Austria, when you can find blooming Christ or Snow Roses, like we use to call the Christmas Rose, on many places. The only reason, why I would like to own a little bit bigger garden, would be, because I could have a paved path with planted Christ Roses on the left and right. That would be the perfect morning walk with my black Labrador.

Story goes that the flower is commonly called the Christ(mas) Rose, due to an old legend that it sprouted in the snow from the tears of a young girl who had no gift to give the Christ child in Bethlehem.

The Flower can be found from Switzerland to southern Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and sometimes Northern Italy.
